What Home Projects Really Cost
A calculator tells you how much material you need. A cost guide tells you what the whole job should cost, where the money goes, and which line items contractors mark up the most. Every guide below is built from published national cost data checked in October 2026, shows its numbers in plain tables, and links to the matching free calculator so you can run the figures for your own house.

Read the guideHow to Use These Guides
Start with the guide for your project to learn the price structure: what materials cost, what labor costs, and which extras are worth paying for. Then open the matching calculator and enter your real measurements. The guide gives you the market context, the calculator gives you your number, and together they put you in a strong position when a contractor quote lands in your inbox. If a quote sits far outside the range in the guide, you will know exactly which line to ask about, and a good contractor will happily explain the difference in writing.
Prices here are national ranges, because labor in a rural county and labor in a major metro can differ by half again. Treat every figure as a planning range, refresh your expectations with two or three local quotes, and never sign a contract based on any website estimate, including ours. That is not modesty, it is how renovation budgets survive contact with reality.
